Renal Profile

An assessment of renal function may be required for several reasons such as to identify renal impairment, to monitor disease progress, to assess baseline measurements prior to starting treatment with certain drugs and to monitor disease progress.

The type of measurement of kidney function performed will be determined by the reason for assessing renal activity.   Patients at high risk of kidney disease are those with diabetes, hypertension, obesity, > 50 years of age, acute kidney injury, long-term history of OTC medications and if family history of chronic kidney disease.

Electrolytes are involved in most major metabolic functions that occur in the body. They serve to function as conductors of electrical impulses, essential for nerve and muscle function; exert osmotic pressure maintaining body fluid balance and in acid base balance to resist pH changes in bodily fluids.

Renal profile incorporates urea, creatinine, Sodium, potassium, chloride and GFRe.
