Enfer’s Medical Directors have overall responsibility for the operation and direction of the clinical service at Enfer Medical. Our Medical Directors are responsible for and oversee the clinical, scientific, advisory and educational activities relevant to all services provided. Their leadership is focused on responding to the needs of customers and delivering an exceptional and personalised service ensuring the patient gets the care they deserve.
They are supported by an experienced team of fellow clinical consultants, external expert advisors and professionals at management and board level to provide a quality focused medical laboratory in keeping with ISO15189.
Lillian joined Enfer Medical as a Medical Director in June 2021. Lillian is a Consultant in Clinical Microbiology, she has been registered on the Specialist Division of the Irish Medical Council (Registration Number 019547) since 2009 and is a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK).
Lillian has many years of experience as a Consultant in Clinical Microbiology. Having worked in referral hospitals, Lillian has a broad range of clinical and Infection Prevention and Control expertise and has been a member of local and national strategic committees with a focus on infection prevention, preparedness and outbreak management.
Joanne joined Enfer Medical as a Laboratory Medical Director in June 2021. Joanne is a Consultant in Clinical Microbiology and has been registered on the Specialist Division of the Irish Medical Council since 2013 (Registration Number 221239). Joanne is a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK) and holds a MSc in Healthcare Management from Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI).
In addition to her clinical experience in the healthcare service, Joanne has worked in the area of Public Health Microbiology and has contributed to the development of National and European guidance on surveillance and prevention of infectious disease.
Shari joined Enfer Medical in early 2022 as a Consultant in Chemical Pathology. Shari is a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK). Her role is to oversee the clinical chemistry diagnostic services and provide related clinical advice.
Shari’s areas of clinical practice are Chemical Pathology and areas of special expertise are laboratory quality assurance/management.
Aine joined Enfer Medical in 2022 as a Consultant Haematologist. Her role is to oversee the haematology diagnostic services and provide related clinical advice. Aine is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and a member of the Faculty of Pathology of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.
Aine completed her Haematology Specialist Training in Ireland and the UK and has worked as a Consultant Haematologist for the HSE since 2016. She maintains membership of both National and International professional organisations, which deliver research and education. Her main areas of interest include Lymphoma, Myeloma and Benign Haematological conditions.
Ornaith joined Enfer Medical in 2021 as our GP Advisor. Ornaith graduated from NUIG in 2004 and subsequently worked in various specialties in hospital medicine, she completed a four-year formal GP training scheme, graduating in 2010 from the Midlands GP Training Scheme. Following this, Ornaith’s focus was in the area of Women’s health for a number of years, before combining this experience with her general practice background. Ornaith holds memberships in General Practice and Diplomas in Women’s Health, Child Health and Medicine for the Elderly. She also works in GP-led gynaecology clinics in all three of the major maternity hospitals in Dublin.
Ornaith is currently a member of the Irish College of General Practitioners, a registered LARC tutor in a training and supervisory role, a member of IASRHCP, the Irish Association of Sexual Reproductive Health Care Professionals and a member of the British Menopause Society.
Suzie is the Scientific Director at Enfer Medical where she leads the multidisciplinary laboratory team. Suzie has managed and developed diagnostic virology services for over 20 years with areas of special interest in pathogen genomics, diagnosis of emerging pathogens and in antiviral resistance. She holds an Adjunct Associate Professorship at the School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science at University College Dublin where she lectures in molecular epidemiology of infectious pathogens and precision medicine.
Suzie is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK) and has holds membership with numerous national and international clinical laboratory associations. She leads the Enfer Medical “Continuous Professional Development Programme” which supports staff to excel in all areas of biomedical sciences and contribute positively to the patient journey.
Together with our Clinical Team, our external expert advisors play a key role in the Enfer Medical Advisory Board. Established in 2021, the Enfer Medical Advisory Board provides key influences to the shape and strategic direction of the Company and supports us in delivering our vision and mission for our clients and their patients.
Dr. Tony Holohan is Chair of the Enfer Medical Advisory Board. In his former role as Ireland’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Tony successfully led the country’s national response to COVID-19, creating public confidence and engagement, and ultimately helping to save lives.
Since graduating as a doctor and specialising in public health, Tony has spent his career working to bring about meaningful change and long-term better healthcare for the Irish people. As Deputy CMO, Tony played a leading role in reshaping Ireland’s cancer services.
As CMO, he led the delivery of the ambitious cross-sectoral Healthy Ireland Initiative and went on to work extensively on policy development in areas such as cancer control, patient safety and quality, prevention, reproductive health, primary care, health information and health technology assessment.
Tony’s stewardship of the public health response to the pandemic earned him wide respect for his leadership, agility and resilience. Ireland was reported by The Lancet in March 2022 as having one of the lowest excess mortality rates globally during the pandemic, and one of the highest uptakes of COVID-19 vaccination in the world.
Having stepped down as CMO in July 2022, today Tony is a Board Member of the Irish Hospice Foundation, and Adjunct Full Professor of Public Health at University College Dublin (UCD). He advises a number of leading companies in the healthcare sector.
Prof. Colm Bergin is a Consultant Physician in Infectious Diseases, St James’s Hospital, Dublin and Professor in Infectious Diseases at Trinity College Dublin. He is Chair, Antimicrobial Stewardship Programme, St James’s Hospital and is Joint Lead, National Infectious Diseases Clinical Programme, Health Service Executive.
Prof. Bergin has clinical and research expertise in chronic viral infections and their treatment outcomes, health services research with particular interests in complications associated with HIV-HCV co-infection, health-related outcomes, medical education, clinical trials and pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment interventions. He developed the clinical specialty of Infectious Diseases at SJH and integrated the specialty with the previously established Department of GU Medicine. He has lead the political advocacy to establish the field of social inclusion health and in advocating for patients from underserved and disadvantaged populations. In March 2020 Professor Bergin was invited to become a member of the National Crisis Management Team (NCMT), HSE and in April 2020 joined the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET), Department of Health (DoH). Professor Bergin was appointed as foundation National Clinical Lead, Infectious Diseases, HSE in March 2020.
Prof. Bert Niesters is the Director of the Laboratory of Clinical Virology at the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention, the University Medical Center Groningen and University of Groningen, the Netherlands. Over the course of his career, Prof. Niesters has been involved in the discovery and characterisation of several new viruses and variants. In recent years, he has been focusing on molecular diagnostics and its clinical value in a transplant setting as well as in monitoring the treatment of hepatitis viruses. More recently, his interest has been focused on rapid regional epidemiology, as well as the cost-benefit of rapid point-of-impact molecular testing. Special interest is focused on raising awareness for the detection of enteroviruses D68 and its relationship with acute flaccid myelitis.
Since 2017, he is the chair of the executive board of QCMD (Quality Control of Molecular Diagnostics, Glasgow). He is a technical assessor and lead assessor for the Dutch Council of Accreditation and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Virology. Since 2021, he is a member of the Expert panel on in vitro diagnostic devices (IVD) of the European Commission. He is an (co)-author of more than 300 papers, chapters, and reviews. For his entire work, he received in 2016 the “Ed Nowakowski Senior Memorial Clinical Virology Award” from the Pan American Society for Clinical Virology.

A graduate of UCC, Billy has over 20 years’ experience leading INAB accredited laboratories in the Life Science and Veterinary Science disciplines. A laboratory entrepreneur, Billy has been involved in the establishment and development of several highly successful Laboratory Groups in Ireland, including, Advanced Laboratory Testing Ltd and more recently, the establishment of Enfer Medical Limited.
In March 2020, Billy led the establishment of the COVID-19 testing facility at Enfer and as Chairperson of Enfer Medical, Billy now looks forward to an exciting chapter in the laboratory landscape in Ireland.
Louis Ronan is an Irish entrepreneur who has worked in the laboratory service sector for the past 12 years amongst other businesses.
Louis is an Executive Director of Enfer Medical working with the Executive Team on new business developments and strategic planning.
A graduate of Law from Queens University in Belfast, Paul has held Senior Management roles in several Global organisations. Over the past 10 years Paul worked for an International IVD manufacturer as Global Manager, developing high performance commercial teams across Europe and Asia.
Most recently, Paul developed and led the team responsible for delivering both PCR and Antigen travel tests during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dolores’ considerable experience spans the areas of both business and clinical science. Having spent 13 years at Director level working for a successful Irish Entrepreneur, Dolores joined the Irish Hepatitis C Outcomes Research Network (ICORN) in 2014 working with a multidisciplinary team of Infectious Disease Consultants, Hepatologists, Public Health, Scientists, Virologists etc. and overseeing the clinical research programmes/initiatives developed by the Network and Members.
Dolores currently leads the commercial/client services team at Enfer Medical, working collaboratively with clients to deliver a service tailored to their needs and in turn enhancing patient care.
A graduate of the Department of Industrial Microbiology, University College Dublin, Paul has over 20 years’ experience leading large teams in high-throughput diagnostic testing at INAB accredited laboratories. Paul has worked with the Enfer Group for over 20 years and has led the implementation and management of national contracts for TSE and BvD providing PCR testing for over 1.6m samples each year.
Paul has been instrumental in the establishment, roll-out, management and delivery of COVID-19 diagnostic testing at Enfer since March 2020 and he continues to manage all aspects of Enfer Medical laboratory operations.
Margaret has worked as a Quality Manager in laboratories accredited to ISO17025 for 22 years and successfully maintained INAB accreditation throughout this time. The laboratories involved were in the Microbiological and Chemical testing of Food, Water and Environmental samples, and Animal Disease testing. Margaret leads and manages the operation and development of the laboratory quality management system and engages all laboratory team members in the delivery and embedding of the culture and practices of that system.
In 2021, Margaret led the team at Enfer Medical to successfully undertake their first INAB audit under the ISO15189 standard and accreditation was approved at the INAB Board Meeting on 13th December 2021. Margaret is joined by a team of highly skilled quality assurance specialists.
A graduate of Waterford Institute of Technology, Tom has over 22 years’ experience working in the laboratory diagnostic landscape, spanning the areas of both Information Technology and Quality Management.
Tom’s expertise and focus has been in the area of Laboratory Information Management Systems including successful implementation, roll-out, management and customer interfaces across a number of ISO accredited Laboratories. Tom is supported by a team of highly skilled IT consultants.
Our Laboratory Management team at Enfer Medical combine their managerial skills and knowledge to ensure the laboratories operate smoothly and efficiently on a day-to-day basis.
With over 17 years’ experience working in INAB accredited, high throughput diagnostic testing laboratories, Jonathan is an experienced professional with a demonstrated history of leading multiple cross functional teams within accredited Quality Management Systems.
With a key focus on process optimisation, Jonathan moved to Enfer in May 2020 to help establish and automate COVID-19 testing and reporting systems; managing both PCR and Data analysis departments. With a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree from Maynooth University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from The National College of Ireland, Jonathan’s effective operational, communication and strategic management skills have proven central to the success of the HSE COVID-19 project at Enfer Medical.
Ann has over 21 years’ experience in high throughput, INAB accredited diagnostic laboratories. A graduate of the Institute of Technology Carlow, Ann has worked with the Enfer Group for over 20 years and supported the implementation of national contracts for TSE and BVD.
Ann has played a vital role in the establishment and roll out of the COVID-19 testing strategy at Enfer with key responsibility for the Sample Receipt and Sample Preparation Laboratories.
A graduate of the University of Ulster, Sarah has extensive experience working as a Medical Scientist in a busy multidisciplinary Medical Laboratory environment across a range of disciplines including Molecular, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology and Serology.
Sarah has gained significant experience working within the Cervical Screening Programme in Ireland performing roles in both cervical cytology and molecular testing. Additionally, Sarah was the lead for FIT analysis and is experienced in STI testing at a leading private laboratory for several years. Sarah leads a highly experienced team of clinical and medical scientists at Enfer Medical.
Susan has worked as a Laboratory Manager in laboratories accredited to ISO17025 for over 17 years, leading on and managing the laboratory operations. With a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Hons) degree from Maynooth University, Certificate in Health Safety and Welfare at Work and Professional Diploma in GDPR from UCD, Susan is now also studying for her BSc (Hons) in Occupational Safety and Health Management from ATU.
In 2022, Susan was appointed as the Health and Safety Manager for the Enfer Group. Susan has a strong interest in Biosafety and Biosecurity and is an Affiliate member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and a member of European Biosafety Association.
Kevin Marron is our Principal Clinical Scientist here at Enfer Medical and leads our Haematology division. A fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science, he gained his PhD in cardiac immunohistochemistry from Imperial College London in 1996. From 2008 to 2022, Kevin was Laboratory Manager at one of Ireland’s largest IVF Clinics, co-ordinating clinical testing for the Sims Group of Clinics. He introduced AMH testing to Ireland in 2011 which has been pivotal in the investigation of reproductive health, usurping both FSH and LH in its diagnostic utility. A flow cytometry specialist, he has published several top tier articles on the subject of immune mediate pregnancy failure and recently a book chapter in “50 big debates in reproductive medicine”.
Edel holds a degree in Biomedical Science from Munster Technological University/University College Cork and was awarded a PhD from University College Dublin. She is a CORU registered Medical Scientist, a Fellow of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM) and previously served for many years on the Microbiology Advisory Body of the ACSLM.
Edel has over 15 years’ experience specialising in Microbiology and Molecular diagnostic testing in INAB accredited hospital laboratories in Ireland. Previously Edel worked as a Senior and a Specialist Medical Scientist in a large academic teaching hospital in Dublin and as a Chief Medical Scientist in a national reference laboratory. Edel has a keen interest in Microbiology specialities including molecular assays, laboratory automation and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
