The incubation period of Y.enterocolitica is typically 4-10 days with a range of 1-14 days. Symptoms of Y.enterocolitica include fever, abdominal pain and diarrhoea that may be bloody and persist for several weeks.
Symptoms persist for 1-3 weeks or occasionally for longer as an individual may continue to shed the organism in faeces for up to 3 months after symptoms have subsided. Complications are rare and can include skin rash, joint pains or bacterial spread to the blood stream.
