Causes of increased total protein include chronic infection, liver disease, autoimmune disease, sarcoidosis, monoclonal gammopathies, dehydration, haemolysis.
Total protein decreases secondary to poor dietary intake and malnutrition, liver or renal disease, excess protein loss in the kidney, gut or through the skin, malabsorption states, extreme burns and during pregnancy.
