Infections with M.pneumoniae are generally asymptomatic or mild, however in some cases may lead to pneumonia or rarely extrapulmonary manifestations. Common symptoms include sore throat, fatigue, fever, headache, and a gradually worsening cough and shortness of breath. Diarrhoea, vomiting, and wheezing may occur in children less than 5 years old.
The period of incubation of M.pneumoniae is 1-4 weeks and the period of infectivity is approximately 10 days.
