HSV-1 and HSV-2 can infect oral and genital mucosa. Primary infection may occur 2-12 days post exposure. Oral and genital herpes infections are generally asymptomatic but symptoms can include painful blisters or ulcers at the site of infection with mainly cutaneous but occasionally ocular, neurological, respiratory or hepatic involvement. Herpes infections are most contagious when symptoms are present but can still be transmitted to others in the absence of visible symptoms.
