The PT is a screening test for the extrinsic/tissue factor and common pathways, and is sensitive to deficiencies of Factors II, V, VII, and X. The sensitivity of the PT to variation in the levels of Vitamin K dependent factors (II, VII and X) make the PT an excellent test for monitoring Warfarin therapy. The result obtained is divided by a ‘geometric mean normal PT’ and an international sensitivity index (ISI) value is then applied to the result producing an ‘International Normalised Ratio’ (INR).
Prothrombin Time (PT), commonly reported alongside the International Normalised Ratio (INR), plays an important role in the investigation of coagulation abnormalities. By measuring the time taken for blood to clot, PT/INR testing supports the monitoring of anticoagulant therapy such as warfarin and assists in the assessment of bleeding risk and suspected clotting disorders in accordance with routine clinical practice in Ireland.
At Enfer Medical, Prothrombin Time investigations are performed using validated laboratory methods, supporting accurate and timely coagulation analysis to inform clinical decision-making and patient management.
