HPSC Guidelines on the Prevention and Control of Tuberculosis in Ireland

‘For successful treatment and prevention of spread to others, it is essential to diagnose Tuberculosis as early as possible. In 2010 (amended in 2014) the National TB Advisory Committee in association with the HPSC, published their guidelines on the prevention and control of TB in Ireland. The purpose of the document is to:

A. To review the guidance on prevention and control of tuberculosis in Ireland including:

  1. Surveillance
  2. Screening
  3. Preventive therapy
  4. Clinical management
  5. Laboratory diagnosis
  6. BCG vaccination
  7. HIV infection and tuberculosis.

B. To review the epidemiology of tuberculosis and provide advice as required to the Royal College
of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) Immunisation Committee on the use of vaccines to prevent cases of
tuberculosis.

C. To act as a source of expert advice on tuberculosis when required to make interim recommendations’.
