Non-cholera bacteria such as V.parahaemolyticus, V.vulnificus, V.fluvialis can lead to several clinical manifestations which are generally mild and self-limiting. Symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal pain and fever.
Infection due to V.cholera is characterised by profuse watery diarrhoea resulting in dehydration with fluid and electrolyte loss and is associated with a poor outcome.
The incubation period for Vibrio-associated diseases ranges from less 1 day to several days. An individual may be infectious for up to 14 days after contracting a Vibrio infection.
